Have you ever felt bound by something? No matter how hard you try, you can’t seem to break free. You feel like you are in a losing battle and things will never change.
But did you know as a Christian there is a freedom you and I can truly walk in that will bring joy and peace? We no longer have to walk around living defeated. Our past fears, mistakes, and regrets are covered by the blood of Jesus.
John 8:36 AMP says:
“So if the Son makes you free, then you are unquestionably free.”
Jesus has broken the chains that bind us and has truly set us free!
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, freedom is defined as: Liberation from slavery, restraint, or the power of another.
When we ask Jesus into our heart and lives, the power of our past is broken. What held us captive no longer has any power over us.
What Am I Free From?
- You are Free form the power of sin
- Free from control
- Free from fear and anxiety
- Free from worry
- Free from legalism
- Free from comparing yourself with someone else
- Free from shame
- Free from past mistakes
- Free from guilt
You are free to be you! Now I’m not saying to jump on the bandwagon of the “you do you” campaign. What I am saying is God has set you free from anything the enemy has used to hold you back from accomplishing God’s will and purpose for your life! This is important for us to know and put into memory.
An Eye Opening Experience
I spent many years living in fear and worry. When I had kids, it seemed like my anxiety exploded as I worried about whether I was doing things right, the health of my children, my health, and whether ministry was hurting my family. I was in bondage to my thoughts and fears. One day, I looked up the word bondage in the dictionary and was astonished as I read its meaning. According to Webster, bondage is: The condition of a slave; servitude. The condition of being involuntarily subject to a power, force, or influence.
Reading this definition is a real eye-opener. I was allowing the enemy to control my thoughts and my life. By being bound by worry and fear, I was held captive and I couldn’t move forward. I was not walking in the freedom Christs gave me.
How Christ Gives Liberty to the Captives
What is holding you back today? What are you being held captive by? Jesus came to give us an abundant life. He set us free from any sin or struggle we would ever face when He came to earth and then died upon the cross. Isaiah 61:1 says:
“He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.”
Jesus’ death paid the price for our sin and failures. We are not bound by them anymore because we have been made new in Him. He has broken the chains of the daily control that our self will and thoughts have over us. Here are some verses that speak of our freedom.
Johns 8:36 says: “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Romans 6:22 says: “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.”
Galatians 5:1 says: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”
2 Corinthians 3:17 says: “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
Galatians 5:13 says: “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”
How Do I Find Freedom?
There are many things you can do to obtain freedom from the things that have you bound.
Prayer and reading God’s Word every day is a good way to learn the heart of God and get His word deep into your heart and mind. Find scriptures that relate to what you are facing and pray that the Holy Spirit will guide you in wisdom and in truth. Pray the scriptures that pertain to your situation. Speaking out the word of God is powerful and effective.
Praise and worship is a powerful tool we have that ushers in the presence of God. Freedom can be gained by our broken hallelujahs. We often forget the power of our praise. Battles are won on our knees. Doors that were once closed will suddenly open. Miracles will occur. Our focus changes from us to the One who created us. Our circumstances dim in His Shekinah Glory. Things that once held us captive are loosed in Jesus’ name. Powerful things happen in our lives when we begin to look to God and praise Him in our broken state.
Talking with someone about your struggles can help bring things to light and give you someone who will stand and pray with you. Just be sure the person you share with can be trusted and won’t go around gossiping about what you have confided in them.

“In Christ, there is freedom from bondage. Believers are no longer slaves; they are free-not through their own merit but through God’s redeeming grace.”
Don’t keep believing the lies satan may be speaking to you that are allowing you to stay bound. The chains are broken through the blood of Jesus.
What are some of the lies we believe?
- You are not good enough
- You will never amount to anything
- You will never overcome this addiction
- You will stay in a fearful state forever
- Your marriage will never last
- Your children will run from God and never return to Christ
- Your finances will never change
When you hear one of these lies, immediately change your thought cycle. Speak what God says about your situation and meditate on His word. You are an overcomer and you have been made free.
Conclusion
Christ came to set us free. We do not need to walk around defeated and bound to the things that hold us captive keeping us from fulfilling God’s plan for our lives. Each one of us can be overcomer’s and walk in liberty. The shame and guilt we carry from past mistakes is covered under the blood of Jesus. No longer can the past hold you captive. You can get up and walk in the freedom that is yours today!
